SUMMER TRIPS
PACK TRIPS - TRAIL RIDES
Experience the beauty and splendor of northwestern Colorado. Our pack trips and trail rides will take you into remote wilderness areas. You can photograph unbelievable scenery and observe wildlife in its natural state ... or just relax and enjoy the blue skies and starry nights of Colorado. These horseback adventures will provide a lifetime of memories.
We will make every effort to arrange a summer pack trip for you that will fit your desired dates.
Our summer wilderness pack or pack fishing trips and our trail rides are designed for people and/or families who really want to get away from it all and experience the beauty and tranquility of nature's high country playgrounds. The vegetation and wild- life are unequaled, fishing is excellent, meals are superb and the entire trip is fun for all. We offer these horseback pack trips into two different areas of northwestern Colorado.
1. Flattops Wilderness Area
This is one of Colorado's true wilderness areas. It's located in the southern section of the Routt National Forest at elevations that range from 8,000 to over 11,000 feet. No motorized vehicles of any kind are allowed in wilderness areas. Travel is by foot or on horseback. Day temperatures range from 70 to 95 degrees, while nights are chilly, with temperatures averaging between 30 and 50 degrees. Rain showers and thunderstorms are common and occasionally, we experience hail or a snowstorm. We go prepared for it all.
A leisurely two-hour horseback ride from the trailhead brings you to our base camp. It's nestled among the pines next to a clear, mountain stream. Days consist of riding (or hiking) to Devils Causeway or China Wall, to one of the mountain lakes, or to one of the larger streams for picnicking or fishing. You can just sit around camp and kick back, pitch horseshoes or throw axes. Evenings are for relaxation - sitting around an open campfire and watching the heavens so full of stars and oh... so close.
Fishing is very good - primarily Cutthroat Trout, a few Brook Trout and an occasional Golden Trout - up to 3 lbs. - flies and worms work best (some lures), We provide all the fishing gear,.. you provide the Colorado Fishing License. We supply everything you'll need except your personal gear, rain gear (needs to be of good quality and cover you well), sleeping bag and Colorado fishing license. The camp here in the Flattops is made up of a cook/mess tent (but we often eat outdoors) and the necessary sleeping tents with cots and foam pads. A quality, well-rounded menu is planned and prepared for you by our camp cook. All horse and tack care is provided by our wranglers.
2. Black Mountain or California Park Areas
These are located in the northern section of the Routt National Forest north and east of Craig, CO. The elevation is from about 8,500-10,000 ft. It is mostly pine forest in the Black Mountain area and concentrated with aspen in the California Park area. Both areas are abundant with wildlife, especially mule deer, elk, antelope, coyote and both Bald and Golden Eagles are often seen.
Exploring these areas in summer, we most often use a progressive type of pack trip. This is somewhat more primitive than our preset camp, which we offer in the Flattops Wilderness area. Here, we set up camp each night along the trail. Camp consists of dome tents, air mattresses (or sleep out under the stars or just under a tarp, if you so desire), all meals and other basic items. Trips in these areas may be scheduled for a two-day overnight or up to a 5 day-4 night adventure.
Dates for these progressive trips are usually in June and early July, Trips in the Flattops Wilderness are usually set up from mid-July through August. Wilderness travel and regulations will be discussed prior to leaving on the trip.
Pack Trip Fees
Overnight - 3 meals (depart 10AM return noon next day) $350 per person
3 day - 2 nights $750 per person
4 day - 3 nights $950 per person
5 day - 4 nights $1,150 per person
Customized trips can be scheduled to fit your group's needs.
-NOTE-
We do not allow alcohol consumption while on the trail or while fishing - only in camp after the day's travel and horses have been put out to graze. Clients supply their own alcoholic beverages.
